Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Nodi

Nino Franco

Wine Notes > Prosecco

Winery: Nino Franco

Region: Veneto

Denomination: Prosecco DOCG

Wine Name: Nodi

Year: 2016

Grapes: 100% Glera

"All the grapes used to make this wine come from a single vineyard called "Col del Vento" made with Charmat Method.

This wine is pure and dean with a light lemon colour, very fresh, high acidity and a medium body and alcohol. It is very flowery and aromatic with traces of apple, pear, pear tears, gooseberry, wisteria and rose, with hints of orange flowers and peach, resulting also in a long lenght.

It is an outstanding Prosecco DOCG, the aromatic flavors balances well the high acidity, the flavor range of primary flavours is large and complex. The bubbles are fine and persistent. It is very round in the mouth. I think this wine could be matched with a lot of food, as aperitif or in matching with snacks, seafood or "Risotto". In China, you could match it with cold dishes very well, as sliced cold chicken in Shangai cuisine. If I could I would drink this wine only."

Prosecco DOCG Rustico

Nino Franco

Wine Notes > Prosecco

Winery: Nino Franco

Region: Veneto

Denomination: Prosecco DOCG

Wine Name: Rustico

Year: -

Grapes: 100% Glera

"Made of 100% Glera grape, cultivated in vineyards located on the hillsides at medium elevations. It is clean and fresh with a light lemon colour. The acidity is high, the alcohol is medium and it is dry. It has a good flavor intensity of primary flavor, in particular: peach, pear, pear drops, quince, with flower and red apple. The lenght is quite long.

It is a great Prosecco DOCG, the rich flavor balances the high acidity very well. It is very fruity and flowery. I found it very soft and delicate in the mouth. It is made by Charmat Method. It is the first Prosecco DOCG that I've tasted of this winery and this pushed me to taste the others. You can understand the attitude of a producer by his "base" wine. Nino Franco makes a very good Rustico and I'm sure they will make other even better wines."

Quinque

Uberti

Wine Notes > Franciacorta

Winery: Uberti

Region: Lombardy

Denomination: Franciacorta

Wine Name: Quinque

Year: -

Grapes: Straw-yellow color, bright with golden shades. Fine perlage, persistent and of great elegance. Year-by-year, it confirms to be a great Franciacorta that has nothing on the most prestigious foreign sparkling wines. One of the wines of my heart. Intense perfume, deep and complex. A wine representing the elegance and the sensibility of this winery at its highest levels. A unique wine, charming you with its complex and developing notes. Perfumes of acacia flowers, then fruity scents of yellow peach and exotic fruits, citric aromas of cider with intense mineral notes. To the palate, it is sapid, fresh, with great structure and personality. It seduces with its elegance and depth, with a very long and persistent finish with mineral notes.

By Michele Longo

It was surprising and I would never guessed that it was Uberti's. You can notice the recall of the Selosse's Solera, that is ingenious. An excellent way to "save" a disastrous vintage. If the Champagne producers are doing the same to their very expensive fruits, obtaining relevant cuvées, why the Franciacorta producers can't do the same thing? Something to keep away that yeasty blossoming for something deeper, as a developed maturation component? I could easly think that it could excite many Sommeliers, as long as the dosage is kept low and the winemaking manipulation is maintained at the minimum. I would buy a bottle for me and drink it with a Michelin star menu, thanks to its complexity and its characteristic and different salinity.

To the palate, it is seducing, complex, fresh and elegance, balanced and sapid. It has a long and mineral finish, making it very pleasing to drink.

By Michele Longo

Why do the producers haven't the ambition of making this kind of cuvée? If you have parcels of old wines they deserve the respect of beeing recognized and of beeing botteled apart. This cuvée woke me the hope of some difference between wines and soils in the wine region of Franciacorta. Despite this the brown label, with the ancient greek goddess, must be repalced with something that represents the wine.

This is a very different and alternative sparkling made with the Arneis grape. Intense aromatics of white peach and pears on the nose matched on the palate. Despite its inherent nature of lower acidity, these grapes were clearly harvested earlier to retain its fresh acidity. The wine has the rich biscuity and brioche notes with a fuller body synonymous with the timing for lees ageing in a Franciacorta but it goes beyond the legal minimum of its counterpart, with a staggering 72 months on the lees! A rare find and a must try if anything for its novelty value!

I don’t like the term “entry level” Barolo. Barolo is never an “entry level”, even less when we are at the presence of such a Barolo. I’d rather go for “traditional”, as an expression of the blend of different vineyards, as it was used to before the world became obsessed with the “single vineyard”. If nowadays Boca denomination can count on a dozen good producers and the cultivated hectares grew up to over 30, it is thanks to Christoph Kunzli. As Cristoph is a perfectionist, in 2016 he resolved that his Boca wine had to wait a little more and thus the 2011 vintage was only presented this year, with one more year of bottling. A winning choice! In my opinion, one of the best ever, for sure the one with more balance since its first sip. A wine reflecting at its best all the characteristics of Alto Piemonte wines. Ample, intense nose of rose petals, fruity scents of cherry and red orange, then balsamic and spicy notes making this wine incredibly elegant. To the palate, it is a wine of great personality, deep, unexpectedly balanced and persistent. Fresh, sapid, with vibrant and ripen tannins, with a long and mineral finish making it an extremely pleasant wine. Already a great wine.

Winery: Accornero

Region:Piemonte

Denomination: Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese

Wine Name: Bricco del bosco Vigne Vecchie

Year: 2011

Grapes: Grignolino 100%

In the past, the Grignolino was, together with Barolo and Barbaresco, the wine of great occurences at the Court of the Kings. Because there are two grignolino: the "fresh" and the "historical" precisely. The first is the most commonly known, table companion like a few others (one of the most gastronomic and versatile wines among the Piedmontese ones), the second, most important and structured, aged in wood, was rediscovered by Ermanno Accornero, reading the books of the 1800 of Savoy. In 2007 the first year. Today it is no longer alone, many high producers followed it. But its remains an absolute benchmark, like this 2011, wine that strikes for its great elegance and finesse. Ruby with Garnet Reflections. The nose kidnaps you with its nuances of delicate and complex spices; hints of small berries and floral notes of violet then. In mouth it is of great elegance and pleasantness. A wine that you don't get tired of drinking.

This was a wine that has a story to tell but it is not ready to just yet…. tasting this wine was like seeing a trailer for a movie that will come out in 3 years. Each time I visited the wine it gave me a hint to what it will become. The fruit is dark, yet reserved; the floral and earthy notes are there but whispering. The one thing you fully understand is the structure of the wine. It is powerful, dense, firm and ready to sleep in your cellar for another decade. This is a wine to reckon with!

Intense grenade-red color. Intense, deep, austere and elegant to the nose. Dark, ripen fruit, scents of spices, “Kentucky” Toscano cigar, licorice and leather. To the palate, it is a wine of good structure, deep, elegant and wrap-around with thick tannins of very fine texture. Long and persistent, with a rich, sapid and pleasant end with ripen fruits comeback.

Well… I enjoyed being wrong. This wine was superb. Loaded with notes of golden apples (fresh and roasted), white flowers, and a touch of honey utterly blew me away. Each sniff and sip gave me a new story…and for me this is exactly what I look for in wine. The palate was round yet vibrant with plenty of acidity to balance out the richer notes found in the wine. The wine was plump with ample amounts of ripe cherry and strawberry notes. Supple and round on the palate with a touch more alcohol but that really states the vintage’s warmth. This wine is FUN! Viberti is a classic estate that has an honest history that while dining in the restaurant makes you dream of the past history of the region. I can imagine in my mind the travelers coming to the Viberti family restaurant and eating pasta and having the family’s wines to prepare for their long journey.
